Paul entered the field of education in 2001, first as a math teacher at a local community college, shifting to high school science in 2002. He taught Biology, Physical Science, and all levels of Physics during his tenure as a high school teacher. He later became a science instructional coach at 2 different schools. Paul later went on to become a science curriculum coordinator in a district of 36,000 students, completely revising the templates used for teacher curriculum so that it was more specific and helpful. He collaborated during this time with teams of teachers to develop quality assessments for all levels and classrooms that would both give teachers actionable data for targeting instruction, as well as district-level checkpoint data.
Paul later jumped into school administration where he assumed the role of associate principal over academics. During his tenure he implemented the Jim Knight instructional coaching model with the 5 instructional coaches that he worked with, as well as developing professional development goals for the staff, targeted learning aligned with those goals, and regular classroom observations to examine the degree of implementation. He also implemented attendance monitoring processes at the school that took it from the lowest attendance in the district to the highest, even beating the attendance rate of schools with extremely low poverty.
After several years of working as a high school administrator, Paul moved to Washington and assisted a school district near Seattle with implementing a curriculum portal which included curriculum documents for classrooms at all levels. After the rollout of the district curriculum, he went on to become the principal of a local elementary school in the same district that was low-performing and involved in state intervention. During his tenure at the school, the school rapidly turned around and performed better than many other schools in the district.
Paul returned to Texas in 2018 and eventually was honored with the task of opening a brand-new elementary school in his original school district. The school was launched with a focus on social emotional learning and training for staff that helped them to implement these ideas. The school to this day is known for having a big heart for students.
After many years in school administration Paul made the decision to return to the high school science classroom, his first love in education. School administration changed his heart deeply and he currently enjoys implementing the social emotional learning ideas that he formerly taught to teachers, as well as backward planning and alignment of curriculum, instruction, and assessment. He is back to his happy place with students each day and enjoys the day to day challenge of working with students in a post-COVID environment.
